From the Ashes, A Phoenix Rises
New Start Youth Development, the brainchild of Obakeng Thipe, traces its roots to the resilience and transformation of a young man born and raised in Munsieville—the home ground of Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Obakeng, a phoenix rising from the ashes, established this organization as both a personal new beginning and a beacon of hope for those he aims to uplift. His journey from a troubled past to a youth development advocate embodies the essence of the organization's mission.

The Challenge
Growing up in Kasi, Obakeng faced the harsh realities that many youths encounter in underserved communities. As a young boy, he found himself entangled in the web of gangsterism, succumbing to the allure of quick gains through drug-related activities. His early involvement in selling and manufacturing drugs mirrored a larger issue faced by many young individuals who perceive economic freedom as a means of escaping their social circumstances.
The Response
New Start Youth Development emerged as a response to this pervasive challenge. Obakeng, having experienced the depths of societal struggles firsthand, recognized the urgent need for interventions that address the root causes of youth vulnerability. His personal transformation became the catalyst for a broader initiative aimed at providing young people with alternatives to the destructive paths he once walked.
